Day 6 – Custer, SD to Greybull, WY
(Day 6 and 7 blog is being written in our Prius en route from Winnemuca, NV to Reno, NV!)
We left the Bavarian Inn, and headed up the road to the Crazy Horse Monument. The plan is to carve a 3-dimensional carving of chief Crazy Horse riding on his horse and pointing in the distance out of the mountainside (like Mt. Rushmore, but viewable from all angles). They have been working on this for the past 60 years, and they only have the head done, so we’re not so sure they will ever get it done. The monument gets no state or federal funding, so that might explain things…As a side note, Duncan got some serious attention from other visitors at Crazy Horse, including some Japanese girls who insisted on taking pictures with him!!
From Crazy Horse, we got back on I-90 and headed into Wyoming. We stopped at Devil’s Tower National Monument, the nation’s first designated national monument. It is several hundred feet high and 1.25 miles in circumference at the base. It holds a lot of meaning for native Americans. The most popular story about Devil’s Tower is that it swelled up from the ground when a group of 7 girls were running from a bear and begged the land to help them escape. Devil’s Tower rose up and eventually put the girls up into the skies, where they still are today as the stars in the Pleiades constellation.
We wanted to try and make it to Cody, WY for the night, but got held up by some amazing winding roads ascending the mountains and some lightning. Michelle did the driving, while David cowered in the passenger seat like a scared child. We ended up stopping in Greybull, WY at a roadside motel…
