Day 3 - Madison, Wisconsin to Austin, Minnesota

Thursday, July 3, 2008

-We spent most of the day in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison is the state capital. We had not planned on making this a stop, but we found out that we will have no problem making it to San Francisco before the movers.

First we took Duncan for a walk on Lake Monona in Law Park. This is one of the two large lakes surrounding the isthmus of downtown Madison.

According to dictionary.com, an isthmus is a narrow strip of land, bordered on both sides by water, connecting two larger bodies of land. David and I had a little "discussion" over the definition of isthmus. Here he is looking up the definition at a bookstore.

My favorite tree on Lake Monona.

David and I went to the rooftop of the Monona Terrace Community Center, partially designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, for a view of Lake Monona. Then we walked to the state capitol and did a self-guided tour of the building.

On the way to the capitol, we ran into Humpty Dumpty sitting on a wall!

We walked around the University of Wisconsin - Madison campus. The campus sits on Lake Mendota. People were all over the place - sitting outside and doing water sports.

Next we headed to La Crosse, Wisconsin, to see the mighty Mississippi River and Grandad Bluff. You can see the Mississippi River, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa from almost 600 feet up!

Before making our descent, we stopped at the Alpine Inn right near the Bluff. We ate dinner with the locals and watched people play volleyball from the outdoor deck.

After dinner we left for Austin, Minnesota. We saw some fireworks and a beautiful sunset while driving. The fireworks may have even sparked the singing of some patriotic tunes.
